Manchester United transfer news: The midfield plan nobody saw coming
Manchester United transfer news: Patience wears thin quickly at Old Trafford these days. United’s recruitment team are widening their net, looking at fresh midfield targets after going behind Mateus Fernandes, who sealed a move to Tottenham. James Ducker reports that the hierarchy is actively drawing up a contingency list. They simply cannot afford to get caught short.
Three names have crept onto the radar. Real Madrid‘s Aurélien Tchouaméni, Brighton’s powerhouse Carlos Baleba, and Bournemouth’s technical asset Alex Scott. Each offers something vastly different to a midfield that has lacked balance for longer than Michael Carrick would care to admit.
Money, as always, dictates the play. Profitability and sustainability rules mean United must sell before they can buy big. Moving Manuel Ugarte on is the real catalyst here.
The three-man shortlist is breaking up the monopoly
Tchouaméni represents the gold standard. He clocked over 2,600 minutes for Real Madrid in La Liga this term, averaging a superb 7.37 match rating. Consistent. Reliable. Not flashy, but he doesn’t need to be. Madrid won’t let him go without a massive fight, though. Then there is Baleba. A completely different beast.
He covers ground others wouldn’t dare chase, breaking up play at the Amex with a real ferocity. 31 Premier League appearances last season have driven his price sky-high. Brighton want £100m. United keep asking, but Tony Bloom isn’t known for giving discounts.
Scott is the wild card. Thirty-four league starts for Bournemouth, three goals, and a reputation as a press-resistant ball-carrier. His goal against Arsenal in April proved he handles the big stage. He glides past challenges rather than hiding from the ball. Scouts love that trait.

Nothing is guaranteed yet. Brighton will hold out for crazy money, Madrid don’t need to sell, and Bournemouth know they hold a winning hand with Scott. It all hinges on how quickly United can sell Ugarte.
