John Souttar transfer news: John Souttar looks increasingly likely to leave Rangers before the summer window closes after fresh interest emerged from England. According to a report from The Rangers Review, Leicester City have joined Sheffield United and Swansea City in tracking the Scotland international. The report, later relayed by Transfer Feed, follows Derek McInnes’ confirmation that Souttar will move on in search of regular first-team football.
That statement removed much of the uncertainty around his future. Despite agreeing a contract extension until 2027 earlier this year, Souttar stayed behind in Glasgow while Rangers travelled to Spain for their pre-season camp. His omission spoke louder than any official announcement and suggested he has slipped out of McInnes’ plans.
Interest is hardly surprising. Souttar remains an established Scotland international and travelled with the national squad to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership season, the 29-year-old played 24 league matches and logged 2,014 minutes. He added five Europa League appearances and featured in six Champions League qualifying fixtures, proving he still offers valuable experience at a high level.
Why John Souttar transfer news points towards a clean break
Rangers shouldn’t hesitate over this one. A permanent sale makes far more sense than keeping an experienced defender who no longer suits the manager’s approach.
McInnes has wasted little time reshaping his defensive options. Younger players such as Olwethu Makhanya have arrived, while Ben Godfrey offers another profile capable of fitting a more aggressive defensive system. That leaves Souttar in an awkward position where his experience has value, yet his role has disappeared.
His injury history matters as well. Achilles problems have interrupted key stages of his career, even though he has responded well whenever fully fit. Rangers now have a chance to sell while his stock remains healthy instead of risking another season where his market value slips without regular football.
Rangers should use the transfer interest to their advantage
Leicester, Sheffield United and Swansea City all need defensive quality, giving Rangers rare leverage in negotiations. Transfermarkt values Souttar at roughly £1.7 million, though genuine competition between three Championship clubs could comfortably lift the package into the £2.5-3 million range.
That fee would strengthen McInnes’ rebuilding plans while removing a sizeable wage commitment. Souttar, meanwhile, secures the consistent football he needs at this stage of his career. Rangers collect fresh funds, clear space in the squad and avoid allowing a valuable asset to lose value on the bench.
Scorzo’s opinion: Scorzo believes Rangers should resist accepting the first offer that lands. Multiple Championship clubs have created a competitive market, and that should drive the price beyond Souttar’s current valuation. Selling him permanently for around £3 million represents smart business, especially for a player who sits outside McInnes’ plans despite producing 24 Premiership appearances last season.
