Manchester United

Manchester United travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, 31 October, with Michael Carrick under pressure to end an eight-match winless run in all competitions. United sit 16th with seven points from eight Premier League games, having won once, drawn four times and lost three. They have scored 10 goals and conceded 13, while Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth increased scrutiny on Carrick’s tactics.

Chelsea sit fifth and will look to exploit United’s defensive uncertainty, particularly if Carrick again shuffles his back four. Luke Shaw has a knock, Patrick Dorgu is out with a hamstring injury, Manuel Ugarte faces a long spell out, and Benjamin Šeško remains unavailable with a shin problem.

Marcus Rashford is doubtful, while Kobbie Mainoo has returned to training but may not be ready to start. United confirmed Mainoo’s return, and Bruno Fernandes remains captain after clear-the-air talks with Carrick.

Manchester United predicted lineup vs Chelsea

Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Senne Lammens; Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez, Diogo Dalot; Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba; Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount; Matheus Cunha.

Lammens should keep his place in goal, while Mazraoui and Dalot offer full-back cover with Shaw and Dorgu unavailable. Maguire could partner Martínez, whose return would add experience after the Bournemouth defeat. Santos and Baleba may continue in midfield because Mainoo is only just returning and Ugarte remains out.

Fernandes looks likely to return after Carrick left him on the bench last weekend. Reuters says their disagreement has been resolved, and the forecast also places the captain behind the striker. Mount can keep his place, while Cunha offers movement through the middle and Mbeumo provides pace from the right.

How can United improve at Stamford Bridge?

United need to protect the centre before sending their full-backs forward, especially against Chelsea’s quick transitions. Santos and Baleba must close passing lanes, while Fernandes should connect midfield with Mbeumo and Cunha quickly enough to test Chelsea’s defensive line.

Mount can press Chelsea’s midfield and support the attack, giving United another route into the box. Carrick’s side must move the ball forward with greater purpose and avoid the careless turnovers that helped Bournemouth take control at Old Trafford.
