Metro News reports that former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel expects Adam Wharton to leave Crystal Palace for Manchester United next summer. Mikel predicted a live episode of The Obi One Podcast, where he spoke enthusiastically about the 22-year-old’s progress and suggested Palace may keep him for one more season before accepting a major offer.
The claim follows a summer in which United showed strong interest, yet Palace resisted approaches and stood firm on a reported £80m to £100m valuation. That stance kept Wharton at Selhurst Park after his excellent 2025/26 campaign, during which he helped Palace win the FA Cup, Europa Conference League and Community Shield.
The midfielder has started the new season as a key figure again, while the Adam Wharton transfer news grows louder around Old Trafford. Mikel’s view puts United at the front of the conversation now, with Palace holding the leverage.
“I love him! I love Adam Wharton; I’m a big, big fan. I think he’s going to go places, though; I think next season he will leave Crystal Palace.”
“I think they want to keep him for one more season, and I see him going to Manchester United next season.”
Adam Wharton transfer news points to a midfield priority
My view is that Mikel’s call makes sense, but the price matters. United strengthened midfield late, bringing in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba after Palace refused to soften their demand. Those deals give Michael Carrick options, yet they don’t necessarily solve Wharton’s role. He offers distribution from deep, receives under pressure and can set the rhythm rather than chase the ball.
That could matter in 2027. United may have numbers in midfield, but a team chasing control needs a player who can dictate where attacks begin. Wharton suits that brief. His 2025/26 numbers underline his value: 52 appearances in all competitions and seven assists. Palace have reason to demand a huge fee, especially with his contract running to 2029. That would make the recruitment look more deliberate.
Adam Wharton transfer news: United have a clearer case than Chelsea
Chelsea present a proposition. Mikel has spoken fondly of his former club, yet even with Enzo Fernández leaving, Chelsea can call on Moisés Caicedo, Roméo Lavia and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, while Reece James has covered the pivot. Under Xabi Alonso, that selection could become crowded, which may weaken Chelsea’s case if Wharton wants a route to regular starts.

Still, I wouldn’t call the move certain. A £100m fee changes the equation, and Wharton would need to decide whether United offers football as well as the biggest contract. Palace can wait, United can reassess, and other clubs can enter the race. Mikel has given the Adam Wharton transfer news story a 2027 destination: Old Trafford. That is an advantage.
