Ayyoub Bouaddi to Manchester United: Manchester rivals lock horns for Lille midfield prodigy
Ayyoub Bouaddi to Manchester United: The summer transfer window is already turning into a proper scrap. Word from The Athletic is that Manchester United and City are currently at each other’s throats over Ayyoub Bouaddi. You might think United would be satisfied after wrapping up a deal for Youri Tielemans. Not a chance.
The recruitment team at Old Trafford is clearly doubling down, pushing hard for the Lille teenager despite having already bolstered their central options. Then there is City. Their interest complicates everything. Having watched him tear it up at the World Cup in North America, Maresca’s side are reportedly ready to throw a massive pile of cash at Lille. It is a straight-up tug-of-war for the most exciting midfield talent in Europe.
The rise of a Lille sensation
Ligue 1 stats don’t always tell the full story, but they certainly paint a vivid picture here. Last season, the kid played 30 times for Lille. 30 matches of pure composure. He wasn’t just making up the numbers, either. We’re talking about a 91% pass completion rate while the heat was at its absolute highest. Lille relied on him for 42 games in total, throwing him into the deep end of European nights when the pressure could have easily swallowed a less focused 18-year-old.
Back in January, he smashed Eden Hazard’s record, becoming the youngest player to rack up 50 appearances for the club. That sort of consistency is rare. It is exactly why Morocco brought him into the fold for their historic World Cup run, where he didn’t just look the part; he looked like he owned the middle of the park.
Tactical battle at the top
Adding someone like Bouaddi to a squad that just signed Tielemans shows a clear shift in thinking at United. Tielemans brings that seasoned, Premier League-ready edge to the XI. Bouaddi? He’s the long-term project. He is the sort of holding midfielder who can actually break a press and shield the back four, something United have been crying out for.
City’s involvement makes this a complete headache. Rumours of an £85 million bid from the Etihad are doing the rounds. That is a massive statement of intent. It forces United into a corner. If they want him, they have to move fast. No dithering.

Scorzo’s opinion:
United need to go big here. Tielemans is a tidy bit of business, but Bouaddi is a generational shift. If he ends up in a blue shirt across town, the fallout among the fanbase will be brutal. Lille are going to demand a king’s ransom, sure. They know exactly what they have in their hands. But paying for it secures an engine room operator for the next ten years. It’s simple: stump up the cash before Maresca decides he’s seen enough and closes the deal. Hesitation is the enemy here. Leave the caution to the accountants; the trophy room won’t fill itself.
