Bangladesh cricket has been rocked by a major controversy after a senior Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official publicly labelled former national captain Tamim Iqbal an “Indian agent,” triggering widespread backlash from players, ex-cricketers, and the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB).

The controversy began when M Nazmul Islam, a BCB director and chairman of the finance committee, made the remark in a now-deleted Facebook post. Screenshots of the post quickly went viral on social media, prompting sharp criticism of its tone, professionalism, and intent.

The comment came in response to Tamim Iqbal’s recent remarks urging the BCB to take a calm and long-term approach regarding Bangladesh’s participation in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which is scheduled to be hosted in India.

What Did Tamim Iqbal Say About the T20 World Cup 2026?

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal was speaking at a local cricket tournament in Mirpur when he addressed the ongoing tensions between the BCB, the BCCI, and the ICC.

Tamim advised the board not to take emotionally driven decisions and instead focus on what is best for Bangladesh cricket in the long run. He stressed that decisions taken now could impact the team for the next 10 years.

The former opener also highlighted the importance of maintaining healthy relations with global cricket bodies, noting that 90–95% of the BCB’s revenue comes from the ICC. According to Tamim, dialogue and diplomacy should be prioritised over reactive moves that could isolate Bangladesh cricket internationally.

His comments came after the BCB raised security concerns about travelling to India, following the BCCI’s directive to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the IPL. The issue prompted the BCB to formally request the ICC to shift Bangladesh’s World Cup matches to a neutral venue, likely Sri Lanka.

However, Nazmul Islam strongly disagreed with Tamim’s stance and accused him of “batting in favour of India,” a remark that has since drawn heavy criticism.

CWAB and Players Condemn BCB Director’s Remarks

The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) reacted swiftly, releasing a strong statement condemning Nazmul Islam’s comment. The association said it was “stunned, shocked, and outraged” by the language used against one of Bangladesh’s most successful cricketers.

CWAB described the remark as “utterly condemnable” and said it insulted not just Tamim Iqbal, but the entire cricketing community. The association has formally written to the BCB president, demanding a public apology and accountability from the concerned director.

Several current Bangladesh players also publicly expressed their displeasure. Mominul Haque called the comment completely unacceptable and said it showed a lack of basic respect for a senior cricketer who served the nation for 16 years. Taijul Islam questioned the professionalism and ethics of board officials making such remarks on public platforms.

Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed said such comments do not help Bangladesh cricket move forward and urged authorities to handle the matter responsibly.

Tamim’s brother and former national player Nafees Iqbal also criticised the lack of respect shown to a player who remains one of the biggest names in Bangladesh cricket history.

Later, Nazmul Islam defended himself, saying the Facebook post reflected his personal opinion and insisting it should not be interpreted any other way. However, the damage appears to have been done, with the BCB now facing visible internal divisions over its World Cup approach and public conduct.
