Three players are at the top of his list to leave: Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, and Marcus Rashford. Manchester United could potentially bring in over £100 million from these sales as Carrick focuses on rebuilding the squad.

1. Manuel Ugarte

Manuel Ugarte hasn’t really lived up to his £50 million price tag since joining from PSG two years ago. Carrick hasn’t shown much interest in making the Uruguayan a central part of his midfield. Ugarte works hard and is still great at winning the ball back, but his struggles to keep possession and control the game have been a problem. With Casemiro also leaving and a midfield rebuild on the cards, Ugarte just doesn’t seem to fit Carrick’s vision.

2. Joshua Zirkzee

Joshua Zirkzee showed plenty of potential when he arrived from Bologna, thanks to his technical skill and smart movement. However, since Carrick took over in January 2026, he has only played Zirkzee six times. That says everything you need to know about where he stands. The Dutch forward seems ready to leave to get his career back on track, with Juventus and Roma both reportedly interested. At 24, he still has plenty of time to succeed, but it just won’t be at Old Trafford.

3. Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford’s departure would be the toughest for fans to swallow. Currently away on loan, a return to Manchester looks doubtful, especially with Barcelona considering a move. His pace and ability to score in big games are well-known, but his consistency has often been an issue. When you factor in his £325,000-a-week wages, keeping the Englishman becomes very hard to justify financially.

Manchester United are moving into the summer with a clear plan. Carrick is prioritising work rate and discipline over big names.
