Chelsea injury news

Chelsea finally have a clean sheet to build on, but their latest defensive improvement has come at a difficult cost. Saturday’s London derby against Tottenham Hotspur will test whether Xabi Alonso can maintain that progress without one of his most experienced players.

The Blues beat Everton 2-0 on October 17, with Pedro Neto scoring twice to secure three valuable points. Chelsea also recorded their first Premier League clean sheet in nine months, ending a frustrating run of defensive performances. However, Emiliano Martínez suffered a fractured jaw after colliding with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during the second half.

Chelsea confirmed on October 18 that the Argentine goalkeeper had undergone successful surgery. Alonso subsequently explained that Martínez would miss several weeks, leaving the manager with an immediate decision before Tottenham visit Stamford Bridge.

Mike Penders now looks set to take responsibility between the posts. The 21-year-old Belgian replaced Martínez against Everton and helped Chelsea protect their advantage during the closing stages.

Why is Alonso backing Mike Penders against Tottenham?

According to Football.London’s Chelsea reporter Bobby Vincent, Alonso remains relaxed about the goalkeeper’s promotion despite the pressure surrounding the derby. The manager has praised Penders’ bravery, personality and performances in previous cup appearances, expressing confidence in his ability to step up when required.

Penders has featured three times across all competitions this season, including two EFL Cup appearances. He kept a clean sheet during Chelsea’s 2-0 cup victory over Luton Town, while his brief Premier League appearance against Everton included a save and two clearances. Those moments offer encouragement, although Tottenham will provide a considerably tougher examination.

The Belgian’s distribution could prove particularly valuable. Alonso wants Chelsea to build patiently from the back, using the goalkeeper as an additional passing option when opponents press high. Penders must therefore combine accurate passing with sensible decisions, especially when Spurs attempt to close down his defenders and force mistakes near the penalty area.

Chelsea have another selection concern on the left. Pep Chavarría missed the Everton match after picking up a minor injury, allowing Jorrel Hato to start instead. The young defender responded well, assisting Neto’s opening goal and contributing to Chelsea’s defensive performance. Alonso was due to provide a further fitness update before the derby.

Chelsea injury news: Can Chelsea maintain their defensive shape without Martínez?

Chelsea must protect Penders without abandoning the principles that brought them success at Everton. Their fourth-place position, supported by four wins, one draw and two defeats from seven league matches, gives Alonso reason to trust his approach rather than make sweeping changes.

However, Tottenham will test the young goalkeeper’s concentration, particularly through crosses, second balls and pressure around Chelsea’s penalty area. Penders needs clear communication from his centre-backs and protection from midfield, while the defenders must avoid unnecessary back-passes that invite trouble.

His limited experience makes Saturday a significant examination, but Chelsea should judge him on his decisions rather than his age. If the defence keeps its shape and the midfield offers reliable passing options, Penders can concentrate on handling the situations in front of him instead of trying to solve every problem himself.
