With speculation growing over the futures of Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez at Stamford Bridge, another key Chelsea player has cast doubt on his long-term plans. While away with the Spanish national team during this international break, defender Marc Cucurella spoke openly about the possibility of returning to his boyhood club, Barcelona. According to reports from talkSPORT and Mundo Deportivo, the left-back admitted that such an offer would be very hard to turn down, despite being under contract in West London until 2028.

The 27-year-old, who joined the La Masia academy back in 2012, made it clear that any career move would depend on his family’s needs. He explained that while he isn’t pushing for a move right now, he is keeping his options open for the future, noting that if an opportunity comes up, he will do what is best for his family.

These comments come at a difficult moment for the Blues, who are currently sixth in the Premier League following a painful 8-2 aggregate loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Cucurella is a regular starter in the current setup, but his latest remarks suggest his long-term loyalty might lie back in Catalonia.

“Let’s see, it’s clear that if those situations arise, well, they are hard to turn down, but I would consider it in the end,” Cucurella said.

“It is not just me. I also have to think perhaps about my family, and together we would decide what is best for us.

“But, as I have said before, right now I am not thinking about that. “If it comes, it will come, and we will see what decision is made.”

Should Chelsea facilitate a homecoming for Marc Cucurella this summer?

Chelsea are in a position where a player’s personal ties to his past could actually help the club’s finances. Cucurella has clearly stepped up his game after a rocky start, showing plenty of grit and a high work rate that has helped him rank well for successful passes from the left flank. He is known for his constant pressing and a 91.8 reliability rating in defence, though his lack of recovery pace and occasional errors in big games are still a concern.

The real point to consider isn’t just that he wants to go, but that Chelsea need to move away from players who see the club as a stepping stone. With the Spanish defender now 27 and valued at about €50 million, the Blues should look to sell and recoup a good chunk of their £63 million investment.

£100m Italian star has opened the doors for a Chelsea move this summer – Should the Blues make a move?

If a player as important as Cucurella is already dreaming of Barcelona, his focus during a tough Premier League season might slip. Because of this, Chelsea would be smart to work out a deal to fund a younger, more settled replacement. Keeping a distracted player rarely works when you’re trying to win titles. While his energy is great, the club have to focus on building a squad that is fully committed to the project at Stamford Bridge.
