Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez replacement has emerged from an unexpected source after a dramatic final day left them without the midfield addition they wanted. According to The Standard, manager Xabi Alonso plans to use his 26-year-old captain in central midfield against Arsenal, with Reece James expected to play alongside Moises Caicedo.

The move follows Enzo Fernandez’s £125m switch to Manchester City, completed on Deadline Day, while Chelsea’s attempt to bring Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara to Stamford Bridge collapsed at the final moment. The Standard says Alonso already viewed James as a serious midfield option before taking charge, with James moving inside more often under Enzo Maresca late in his reign. Alonso therefore sees a solution inside his squad.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez replacement may work short term

There is a tactical case for James. The Standard points to his standout displays beside Caicedo in Chelsea’s 3-0 Club World Cup final win over Paris Saint-Germain and last season’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool. James gives Alonso size, passing range, defensive bite and the ability to carry the ball through pressure, while his experience as captain can help a midfield that lost its senior organiser.

Alonso has praised his intelligence, awareness before receiving possession and physical suitability for Premier League football. That matters against Arsenal, where midfield duels can decide the match.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez replacement creates another issue

Still, making James the permanent answer would create another problem. His best work usually comes from the right, where he can shut down wide attacks, overlap, cross and strike from distance. At 26, he enjoyed a steady 2025/26 campaign, making 29 Premier League appearances, scoring twice and assisting four times across 1,966 minutes.

That durability gives Chelsea reason for optimism, yet central midfield demands constant scanning, quick pressure resistance and repeated defensive actions in congested areas. It could expose him to workloads Chelsea should manage carefully after his previous hamstring problems.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez replacement should therefore remain James only for as long as necessity demands. Once Roméo Lavia returns to full fitness, Alonso has a stronger reason to restore James to the right. The captain can support midfield in certain matches, but turning one of Chelsea’s most complete wide defenders into a pivot would weaken the side elsewhere. The emergency answer makes sense; making it permanent does not, for now, in my view.
