Dusan Vlahovic to Manchester United: Old Trafford’s summer striker gamble

Manchester United are preparing a significant attacking overhaul ahead of the summer transfer window, which opens on 15 June. According to CaughtOffside, the club have five strikers on their radar, with Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen sitting at the top as the dream target. Dusan Vlahovic to Manchester United has become one of the louder transfer stories in recent weeks, with the Juventus centre-forward emerging as a notable name on United’s shortlist.

Juventus did everything they could to keep Vlahovic at the Allianz Stadium, with sporting director Damien Comolli holding multiple private meetings to persuade him to stay. The highest offer extended was a two-year extension worth £7.1 million per year, including bonuses. Still, Vlahovic held out for around £9 million net annually, a gap the club refused to bridge. As a result, he will depart on 30 June, with a host of Europe’s top clubs interested

Benjamin Sesko currently leads United’s attack, with Bryan Mbeumo providing cover, but the club reportedly want stronger depth and different profiles to complement the Slovenian. Joshua Zirkzee looks increasingly likely to depart, with Serie A clubs tracking the Dutchman. Bayern Munich have also made contact over Vlahovic, seeing him as a potential back-up to Harry Kane, and could face competition from Newcastle United and Napoli.

Dusan Vlahovic to Manchester United: does the profile fit Carrick’s system?

Michael Carrick has settled into a 4-2-3-1 formation at Old Trafford, a structure built on short, frequent passing and defensive organisation, reflecting the approach he applied at Middlesbrough over three seasons. That system asks a lot from its centre-forward. The striker must press from the front, hold the ball under pressure, and link play intelligently before making runs in behind.

Vlahovic is a classic penalty-box striker. He offers aerial ability, back-to-goal play, and a genuine goal-scoring instinct capable of converting even the smallest of chances. His Juventus numbers are not eye-catching at first glance, but for most of his time in Turin there were off-field contract distractions, and he still managed seven goals in 19 league games last season. That return, in difficult circumstances, speaks to his quality.

The wage question around Dusan Vlahovic to Manchester United

The biggest obstacle is financial. No suitor has been willing to match the wages Vlahovic earns in Turin, where his net salary runs at approximately £10.4 million per year. Manchester United are looking to reduce their wage bill following Casemiro’s exit, with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford still on sizeable contracts.

On balance, Vlahovic suits Carrick’s system better than Zirkzee ever did. He is physical, direct, and a proven finisher. If he accepts a wage reduction and United move quickly before Bayern or Chelsea get there first, this transfer makes genuine sense for both parties.
