West Indies produced a strong all round display to beat England by 30 runs in their T20 World Cup 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After posting 196 for 6, the Caribbean side used smart spin bowling in the middle overs to bowl England out for 166 and secure an important win.
The result ended England’s strong run in T20 cricket and exposed their struggles against quality spin.
Rutherford Rescues And Powers West Indies
West Indies were in early trouble after losing two quick wickets and slipping to 8 for 2. However, Sherfane Rutherford changed the game with a calm but powerful knock. He remained unbeaten on 76 off 42 balls and hit seven sixes. He rebuilt the innings first and then attacked in the death overs.
West Indies reached 55 for 3 in the power play but kept wickets in hand. In the final overs, Rutherford used his experience of playing at Wankhede to full effect and lifted the total to a strong 196.
For England, Adil Rashid was the standout bowler with figures of 2 for 16 in four overs. In a high-scoring match, he did not concede a single boundary and kept control from one end. However, the rest of the attack struggled to contain the flow of runs.
Spin Chokes England Chase
England started the chase with confidence. Phil Salt attacked from the start and powered the side to 67 for 1 in the power play. At that stage, England looked in control.
But the match changed once West Indies introduced spin. Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase bowled tight lines and varied their pace smartly. Motie picked up 3 for 33 while Chase claimed 2 for 29. Together, they broke partnerships and slowed the scoring rate.
England’s middle order failed to handle the pressure. Quick wickets put them on the back foot, and they never recovered. Sam Curran fought hard and remained unbeaten on 43, but he did not get enough support from the other end.
A run out from a direct hit and regular wickets in the middle overs summed up England’s struggle. From a strong position in the power play, they were bowled out in 19 overs.
West Indies showed better control in key phases of the match and proved that spin can still dominate even on a batting-friendly surface like Mumbai. The win keeps them firmly in the race, while England will need to quickly address their concerns about the middle order.
