India created history by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. The victory helped India become the first team in men’s cricket to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title.
The win also gave India their third T20 World Cup crown after earlier titles in 2007 and 2024. With this, India moved ahead of West Indies and England to become the most successful team in the tournament’s history.

A night full of records for India
India’s victory brought several major records. They became the first team to win three men’s T20 World Cup titles and also the first side to defend the trophy.
The 2026 win also made India the first men’s team to lift the T20 World Cup on home soil. It was also their fourth appearance in a T20 World Cup final, the most by any team.
The massive total of 255 for 5 was another record, becoming the highest score in a men’s T20 World Cup final.
With this triumph, India also moved to 14 ICC trophies across men’s senior and Under-19 events, the most by any nation. The performance confirmed India’s place as one of the most dominant teams in the history of T20 cricket.
