Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup campaign came to a disappointing end with a 61-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. For the host, finishing itself as if nothing had changed from their previous Super 8 match, where England exposed their batting weaknesses.

After winning the toss, Dasun Shanka elected to bowl first with the hope of chasing a low total on a spinner-friendly surface. However, the blackcaps managed to put together a competitive total of 168/7 in 20 overs, which turned out to be too much for Sri Lanka. India, the host nation, could only muster 107 runs, handing their rivals a convincing win.

Top Performers

With a stellar 32 off 22 balls and a mesmerising performance of 4/27 with the ball, Rachin Ravindra was a major highlight of the clash, as he announced his way back into form.

Additionally, skipper Mitchell Santner scored 47 off 26 balls, and Cole McConchie contributed a 31-run innings, helping New Zealand post a competitive total.

Sri Lankan bowling had several positives. Mahesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera took 3 wickets each, but in the end, the home side’s batting display made the bowling effort seem detrimental.

Sri Lanka vs New Zealand- Worst Performers

Pathum Nissanka’s role was an important one during the run chase. But the Sri Lankan opening batter disappointed with the bat once again. His dismissal on the second ball of the innings triggered a domino effect among other Sri Lankan batters, ultimately leading to a collapse.

Sri Lanka’s middle order was also one of the reasons why the home side could not successfully chase down the total. Skipper Dasun Shanaka, along with Pavan Rathnayake and Charith Asalanka, lost their wickets at critical junctures, leading to a crushing defeat.

Sri Lanka vs New Zealand- What is the way forward?

New Zealand is currently in second place in Group B of the Super 8, behind England with 3 points in 2 matches. They are almost certain to qualify from the group for the semi-finals along with England.

Sri Lanka’s campaign, however, has come to a disappointing end. Their loss to New Zealand has also marked the near end of Pakistan’s campaign, as they suffered a crushing defeat against England after their first Super 8 match was abandoned due to rain.
