The Jules Kounde Arsenal story has gathered pace as Arsenal search for defensive cover after William Saliba suffered a back injury during France’s World Cup run, with the club confirming that he faces an extended absence and does not require surgery. Jurrien Timber has yet to return from a groin problem, leaving Mikel Arteta short of proven options as the campaign approaches. The Guardian reported that Arsenal were intensifying their search, while its latest transfer round-up says the club remain interested in Barcelona’s Jules Koundé.

Spanish reports have suggested Barça could consider an offer, with €55 million representing the fee paid to Sevilla in 2022. Fabrizio Romano has cooled the story, saying talks have not advanced. Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa remains another name on Arsenal’s list. The Guardian said Arsenal had seen a Konsa bid rejected, with Villa valuing their defender at £60m. That leaves Arteta short at centre-back.

Jules Kounde Arsenal: report points to a defensive move

Koundé, 27, makes obvious footballing sense because his game covers two jobs. Barcelona have used him mainly at right-back since his 2022 arrival, while his earlier career at Sevilla established him as a centre-back. That flexibility matters for Arteta, whose build-up demands defenders who can shift positions without damaging the team’s structure. His 2025/26 league return included 30 appearances, one goal and three assists, with passing accuracy around 93 per cent.

Jules Kounde Arsenal: why the numbers make sense

There is a tactical argument here that goes beyond squad padding. Koundé can invert from right-back, defend centrally and help Arsenal circulate possession, qualities that become particularly useful if Ben White or Timber cannot provide continuity. Arteta would gain a defender who can switch roles without forcing a player to change position during matches at short notice. That matters because Arsenal need cover, not another project.

Yet the timing remains the sticking point. Arsenal need defensive depth now, but Barcelona have little reason to rush; Koundé has a long contract, and the player has publicly indicated that he wants to stay. Barcelona renewed his deal until June 2030 in August 2025, while he said before the World Cup that he expected to remain in Catalonia.

A fee of €50m-€80m would represent a serious outlay for a player signed primarily because injuries have suddenly changed the equation. Konsa could prove the more practical answer despite Aston Villa valuing him at about £60m. For Jules Kounde, the attraction is clear; the deal itself looks far harder to force through.
