Michael Carrick

The Man Utd Lineup report supplied sketches a hypothetical Manchester United side for the Premier League opener at Hull City on 22 August 2026, with every transfer assumed complete. The fixture is confirmed by the Premier League, with kick-off listed at the MKM Stadium. Michael Carrick is the permanent head coach after guiding United to third place and 11 wins in 16 matches during his spell.

I feel like Senne Lammens will start in goal, Diogo Dalot at right-back, Harry Maguire beside Jhon Lucumí (if he is signed), and Lewis Hall or Jorge Salinas at left-back. The midfield pair consists of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, with Bruno Fernandes ahead of them. The attack features Bryan Mbeumo or Iliman Ndiaye on the right, Matheus Cunha on the left and Benjamin Šeško centrally.

Man Utd Lineup: midfield gives Carrick control

I like the idea, although the midfield needs a closer look. Santos has arrived for £50m, including £48m guaranteed, while Tielemans joined for £35m. Santos gives Carrick running power and defensive coverage; Tielemans offers the passing range to move opponents before United accelerate through Fernandes.

That pairing makes sense for a possession-heavy 4-2-3-1, yet Carrick would need Santos to protect Tielemans when the Belgian steps forward. The shape could become vulnerable if both full-backs push high, especially with Maguire’s lack of recovery pace.

Man Utd Lineup still has two big question marks

The left-back slot remains speculative. United have pursued Lewis Hall, but Newcastle have resisted a sale, so presenting Hall as secured would overstate the evidence. The Jorge Salinas deal is close. Ndiaye has appeared among United’s attacking targets, but reports have not established that the Everton forward has completed a move.

Šeško’s fitness matters because this XI depends on a reference point up front. Cunha can drift inside, Fernandes can arrive late, and the right winger can attack the space created by Šeško’s movement.

So, as a dream XI, this has logic. As a prediction for the Hull team, it goes too far. The midfield is the most credible part; Hall, Lucumí, Salinas and Ndiaye need firmer evidence before they can sit in a settled Man Utd Lineup.
