Manchester United

Michael Carrick’s first full season in charge did not begin well. A 2-0 defeat away to Hull City on the opening weekend left Manchester United without a goal or a point, with set-piece defending exposed as a glaring weakness. Sunday’s home fixture against Ipswich Town is important now, and my Man Utd predicted lineup for this one reflects a need for both defensive solidity and attacking intent.

Man Utd predicted lineup vs Ipswich: Who starts as Carrick looks for a bounce-back win?

Senne Lammens starts in goal. Noussair Mazraoui gets the nod at right back, with Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven forming the centre-back partnership. Luke Shaw, fit and available, comes in at left back. It’s a back four that has quality on paper, though Hull’s ability to exploit set pieces so easily will have made Carrick’s coaching staff think hard about their defensive shape this week.

Man Utd predicted lineup: The midfield and attack

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos sit as the double pivot in central midfield, a pairing that offers both defensive cover and the ability to recycle possession quickly. Bruno Fernandes operates in his favourite advanced midfield role, with Bryan Mbeumo on the right and Patrick Dorgu on the left providing the width. Matheus Cunha leads the line.

Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha are identified as the central attacking threats in this United side, and Sunday’s match gives both players a chance to actually show it. Mbeumo brings directness from the right, and his delivery into the box is a consistent threat. Dorgu, an energetic presence down the left, gives United a different dimension going forward.

Man Utd predicted lineup: Why this XI makes sense

Ipswich travel to Old Trafford on the back of a 2-1 win over Sunderland on opening day, with substitute Jack Clarke scoring a dramatic 90th-minute winner. Gary O’Neil’s side carry genuine confidence, and United can’t afford to treat this as a routine home fixture. The visitors knocked Leicester out of the League Cup 3-1 in midweek as well, so they arrive in Manchester with real momentum.

This predicted XI gives Carrick a solid structural base, with Santos and Tielemans providing the engine room United badly missed against Hull. Ipswich do have injury concerns coming into this game, with Jack Taylor out with a knee problem and Azor Matusiwa also unavailable, which limits their options in midfield. United’s Man Utd predicted lineup carries more than enough quality to take advantage of that, provided the defensive discipline holds from the first whistle.
