Manchester United’s disappointing start to the 2026/27 season has put Michael Carrick under serious pressure, with Sunday’s Premier League meeting against Bournemouth carrying major significance for his future. The Red Devils have struggled to maintain the form that secured Champions League qualification last season, and their latest European setback has intensified questions about the manager’s position.

United have collected seven points from their opening seven league matches, recording one win, four draws and two defeats. Across all competitions, they have managed just two victories in eleven games, while a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como exposed problems with their pressing, defensive shape and intensity.

Carrick initially restored confidence during his interim spell last season, guiding United to third place. However, his permanent tenure has brought different challenges, with injuries affecting several first-team regulars and limiting his tactical options.

According to Liverpool.com, former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp may have indirectly influenced United’s search for a potential successor. Reports from The Telegraph have identified Julian Nagelsmann as a leading candidate should the club decide to replace Carrick.

How has Klopp influenced Manchester United’s managerial search?

Nagelsmann’s reported availability has placed him among the names attracting attention at Old Trafford. The 39-year-old previously managed Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig before taking charge of Germany, building a reputation for tactical flexibility and detailed preparation.

Reports suggest United view him as a serious option, while his previous working relationship with recruitment director Christopher Vivell at Leipzig could strengthen his appeal.

Klopp’s connection to the story centres on reports linking him with a senior role in German football. However, the precise sequence of events described in the reports requires confirmation, and United have not announced an agreement with Nagelsmann.

Why is Carrick facing mounting pressure?

The defeat against Como exposed a growing tactical problem. United have struggled to press opponents consistently, while captain Bruno Fernandes has reportedly questioned the coaching staff’s approach. Their passive defensive shape has allowed opposition sides to control matches too easily.

Carrick must address those concerns against Bournemouth, particularly with injuries affecting Benjamin Šeško, Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martínez, Marcus Rashford, Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw and Manuel Ugarte.

During his latest press conference, Carrick reportedly delivered a lengthy defence of the squad, stressing the club’s values and promising to protect his players from outside criticism. The board has retained him for the Bournemouth fixture, although his longer-term position remains uncertain.

Would Nagelsmann solve Manchester United’s tactical problems?

Nagelsmann could bring the flexibility United currently lack. His teams have used different formations, aggressive pressing structures and positional rotations to create space through midfield, giving him several ways to respond when opponents disrupt the initial plan.

However, a managerial change alone would not repair a squad that lacks balance. United invested heavily in attacking and midfield reinforcements during the summer, yet injuries and the absence of a specialist defensive anchor have exposed weaknesses in central areas.

INEOS must therefore judge Carrick on more than the latest result. The hierarchy needs a clear view of whether he can restore intensity, improve defensive organisation and rebuild trust with senior players.

If United appoint Nagelsmann, the club would need to support his methods through recruitment and careful squad planning. Otherwise, Old Trafford could see another coaching change without addressing the structural problems that have left the team struggling for consistency.
