Manchester United have put AC Milan winger Rafael Leao at the top of their summer wishlist for the left flank. To keep the price tag manageable, the club are now looking into a player-plus-cash deal. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, United are open to offering Manuel Ugarte, Marcus Rashford, or Joshua Zirkzee as part of a swap to sign the 26-year-old Portuguese star.

United have already touched base with Leao’s camp to see what it would take to get a deal over the line, showing this is serious interest rather than just a passing thought. Milan are reportedly ready to let him go for around £43 million this summer, and have tasked super-agent Jorge Mendes with finding a buyer. Even though Leao has a massive €175 million release clause, the distance between the two clubs’ valuations is shrinking fast. 

His contract lasts until 2028, and United won’t have any trouble matching his €5.5 million annual net salary. Zirkzee is the main name in these talks; Milan liked him before he headed to England, and he has struggled for game time lately, managing only 551 minutes in 21 games this season. Meanwhile, Leao’s stock at the San Siro has dropped; his goal against Pisa in October was his first at home in Serie A for 17 months, and local fans have even booed him during recent sub-offs.

Does Rafael Leao actually solve Manchester United’s left-wing problem or just relocate it?

Leao is a thrill to watch when he’s on it; fast, direct, and capable of making something happen out of thin air. While his nine goals and three assists this season are decent, those stats are a bit underwhelming for a player supposed to be world-class. He has a habit of drifting in and out of matches, and his work rate off the ball doesn’t quite meet Premier League standards. 

Manchester United already have a habit of picking up players who disappear when things get tough, so signing another, no matter how gifted, could just keep that cycle going. The left side at Old Trafford needs someone who brings high energy and results every single week, not just someone who shows moments of brilliance between long stretches of doing nothing.

Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers is reportedly the top choice, but with a price tag near £100 million, Leao looks like a much better bargain at roughly half that. That logic holds up, but value for money only counts if the player shows up.
