Manchester United transfer news has taken a twist after a report revealed that former 28-year-old Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku turned down interest from two clubs to return to RB Leipzig.

According to Metro News, the Frenchman rejected approaches from Manchester United and Newcastle United because he wanted Leipzig above all. Metro News cited Bild, with comments from Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer on the deal. Schäfer said two clubs were prepared to “go to the limit” financially, yet the player’s determination made the difference.

The forward joined AC Milan from Chelsea for €42 million (£36m) last summer and scored eight goals in 2025/26, adding three assists as Milan finished fifth in Serie A. After Ruben Amorim took charge, he reportedly became surplus to requirements and moved back to Leipzig on loan, with a €28 million (£24m) purchase option.

Manchester United transfer news: why Carrick can accept the snub

From United’s side, the rejection looks worse in a headline than it does within the squad. Michael Carrick wants an aggressive pressing side that can maintain intensity for long spells, raising questions over whether Nkunku represents the right physical gamble after his injury problems at Chelsea.

His knee injury robbed him of continuity and some of his explosiveness, while Milan had him working individually before Leipzig. United could have spent heavily on a player still rebuilding his rhythm, so missing out may save Carrick from an expensive problem rather than a solution.

There’s a detail worth noting. Schäfer’s comments suggest United had financial intent, showing the board backed his recruitment plans despite missing this target. That matters because United can keep their focus on players who match the manager’s demands and want the club as strongly as he did.

That could prove useful during a Champions League season, when Carrick needs forwards who can press, recover and repeat those efforts without a spell on the treatment table or a long conditioning programme.

It points to the bigger issue

Nkunku’s choice says plenty about his priorities. He had unfinished business in Germany, where he became a star and a fan favourite, and Leipzig offered familiarity, trust and a chance to rebuild his momentum without the glare of a Premier League move.

He has made two Bundesliga appearances this season and logged 93 minutes, so the priority looks simple: regain sharpness, stay fit and find his old spark. For Carrick, the Manchester United transfer news will sting, but the gain could simply be avoiding a costly signing that never matched the plan.
