Manchester United transfer news: Manchester United keep tabs on Tchouaméni, but Real Madrid midfielder prefers Spain

Manchester United transfer news: The ambition is certainly there. It always is at Old Trafford. But wanting a player and actually getting them to sign on the dotted line are two entirely different things, especially when you are shopping at the very top of the market. Aurélien Tchouaméni has dominated the back pages for weeks.

The 26-year-old France international is exactly what Manchester United need, a premier, modern defensive midfielder who reads the game like a veteran and anchors a midfield with minimum fuss. According to reports from Simon Stone of BBC Sport, United are well and truly in the hunt. Yet, as the calendar ticks over to 1 July 2026, the harsh reality is starting to bite. He does not want to leave the Santiago Bernabéu.

That is the massive roadblock. Real Madrid might be privately debating whether to cash in on the midfielder, but the player holds all the cards. He wants to stay put. Why wouldn’t he? He has zero intention of agitating for a move as long as he features in the plans of Madrid manager José Mourinho. If he is playing regularly in Spain, a move to Manchester is an incredibly tough sell. It leaves United in an awkward holding pattern, waiting for a green light that may never come.

Decoding the data and the heavy price tag

Look at his output last year. He played 33 times in La Liga, racking up 2,624 minutes on the pitch. One goal and seven bookings do not tell the story. Nobody buys a defensive anchor for their goal return. It is about control. He created 29 chances, completed 1,576 passes, putting him among the top distributors in the Spanish top flight, and rarely ever coughed up possession. He finished the year with a stellar 7.37 average match rating. Reliable. Dominant. He is precisely the type of player Michael Carrick wants to build his new-look United midfield around.

Then comes the money. Fabrizio Romano has pointed out that the Frenchman’s wage demands are a massive stumbling block. His current market valuation is a staggering €70.2 million, and while United are apparently prepared to offer around €12 million a year, matching his current Madrid package is a logistical nightmare for the club’s revised payroll structure. Some reporters, like Ben Jacobs, suggest the salary talk is overblown and that his numbers are not quite in the absurd bracket of past United blunders.

Things have shifted slightly in Madrid over the last 48 hours. The Spanish giants are now reportedly open to a sale, but only on one condition: Tchouaméni has to look them in the eye and ask to go. He has not done that. Meanwhile, he is currently lighting up the 2026 World Cup with France. He set up a goal and completely ran the show in a 4-1 win against Norway on 26 June. His price is going up with every passing game. United are stuck.
