Manchester United Transfer News: Red Devils Seal Atalanta Midfielder In £39M Deal
Manchester United have officially finalised the transfer of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with Fabrizio Romano confirming on 6 June 2026 that all documentation between the two clubs has been completed for a €45m package deal, per his post on X. The Brazilian defensive midfielder will sign a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option to extend by a further year. According to Romano, personal terms had already been agreed since May, making this a deal that had been quietly sealed long before any public confirmation arrived.
The fixed fee stands at €40.5m, with €4.5m in potential performance-related add-ons. ESPN sources also reported that United had been tracking the player for a considerable period and were able to move quickly after a proposed switch to Atletico Madrid stalled. Atalanta, meanwhile, had to appoint a new sporting director in Cristiano Giuntoli and confirm Maurizio Sarri as manager before club-to-club talks could properly progress.
Manchester United Transfer News Update: Why The Official Arrival Is Delayed
Despite everything being agreed, Ederson will not be registered as a Manchester United player until early July. The Sun clarified that Italy’s transfer system and the international clearing systems through FIFA’s ITC will not process his registration to the English FA until the standard international benchmark of 1 July. The Premier League window opens on 15 June, but the international registration rules make that date irrelevant for this particular deal. His medical and official announcements are therefore planned to be completed in early July.
Ederson made 180 appearances across four seasons at Atalanta, contributing 16 goals and 7 assists, and played all 90 minutes in the 2024 Europa League Final, which saw Atalanta beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0. He brings physicality, ball-winning consistency, and a genuine goal threat from midfield, qualities United have lacked since Casemiro’s departure on a free and with Manuel Ugarte now available for sale.
Manchester United Transfer News Opinion: How Good Is This Signing For Carrick?
Honestly, this is a very good piece of business, and here is why. Ederson is expected to operate as the deeper midfielder, giving players like Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo the freedom to drive forward and create chances without defensive responsibility dragging them back. That structure, if it works, solves one of the most persistent problems Carrick inherited.

Peter Schmeichel noted that Ederson’s balance of aggression and composure on the ball is rare and that he never hides when pressure comes, something Old Trafford demands. That matters more than any statistic. United’s midfield has too often gone quiet in big moments, and a player who thrives precisely when the stakes are highest is exactly what Champions League football requires. Romano himself confirmed that Ederson will only be the first midfield signing, with at least one more planned for the summer. For £39m on a long-term deal, Manchester United transfer news does not get much more encouraging than this.
