Rafael Leao to Manchester United – The Transfer Story Gathering Pace

Rafael Leao to Manchester United – AC Milan forward Rafael Leao has provided what many supporters are interpreting as a clear signal that he fancies a move to Old Trafford. Speaking on the Cernucci podcast, Leao confirmed that Manchester United is his favourite Premier League side, citing Cristiano Ronaldo as his idol and the primary reason behind that affection.

United’s primary focus in the upcoming window is on reinforcing the midfield, but other positions are also under consideration, not least the left wing, where Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are both expected to leave permanently. That departure gap makes Leao’s public admission particularly timely.

Is a Rafael Leao to Manchester United deal realistic?

AC Milan are now prepared to sell the Portuguese winger for around €50 million, a dramatic reduction from the €120 million fee he was once attracting from Chelsea. Manchester United secured third place in the Premier League and will play Champions League football next season, which strengthens their appeal as a destination, though midfield remains their primary transfer focus, with Ederson arriving from Atalanta.

Chelsea, Barcelona, Manchester City, and Real Madrid have all registered interest, meaning United face serious competition if they pursue this. Leao’s contract runs until 2028, so Milan hold reasonable leverage, yet the player’s strained relationship with the club’s supporters accelerates his probable exit.

Why Rafael Leao to Manchester United carries both promise and risk?

Leao’s peak came in the 2021/22 season, where he was named AC Milan MVP, contributing 11 goals and 10 assists as they lifted the Scudetto, before a new contract failed to inspire the same brilliance. This season, he managed only nine goals in 23 Serie A appearances, picking up three muscle injuries that disrupted his rhythm badly. The talent is undeniable, but consistency has abandoned him.

Should Michael Carrick spend £50m on Leao? My view:

Carrick faces a genuine fork in the road here. Manchester United need a specialist left winger, and Leao’s pace, directness, and Champions League experience make him credible on paper. Furthermore, his emotional connection to the club could translate into genuine motivation rather than a mercenary switch.

But here is the uncomfortable truth. Leao arrives as a player visibly running from a bad situation rather than running towards a great one. His form this season has been poor, his injury record fragile, and Milan’s own fans have turned on him. Buying a player in that psychological state for £50m is far from a guaranteed investment, and United have already been burned by expensive signings who arrived with clouds following them.

For that money, Carrick could potentially attract a player still operating at full confidence. Leao’s ceiling is extraordinarily high, yet his floor has been disturbingly low in recent years. Unless United’s recruitment team sees concrete evidence of a genuine resurgence, the shrewd call is to admire the Rafael Leao to Manchester United narrative from a distance and spend that budget elsewhere.
