Chelsea have built a more competitive squad under Xabi Alonso, but their next recruitment decision could prove as much about balance as ambition. The Blues currently occupy fourth place in the Premier League, with 13 points from seven matches in the 2026/27 campaign. Meanwhile, Alonso continues to assess where his side can improve without disrupting the progress of his existing players.

At Real Madrid, José Mourinho faces a different challenge. The Spanish giants sit third in La Liga with 21 points from nine matches, six behind Barcelona. Their summer recruitment brought significant changes, including Denzel Dumfries arriving to strengthen the right flank, while Dani Carvajal and David Alaba departed.

Those changes have affected the pecking order at the Bernabéu, leaving one prominent England international fighting for a regular starting place.

Trent Alexander-Arnold Chelsea Transfer

According to a report originally published by Bernabeu Digital, Chelsea are monitoring Trent Alexander-Arnold’s situation at Real Madrid. The 28-year-old joined the Spanish club from Liverpool last summer, but he has struggled to secure a consistent role under Mourinho. Dumfries currently holds the advantage at right-back, while Federico Valverde offers another option when the manager wants greater physical strength and defensive cover.

Alexander-Arnold has recorded one assist in five La Liga appearances this season. Across all competitions, he has played 344 minutes in six matches, contributing one assist without scoring. His passing remains a major asset, with an average of 2.27 key passes per 90 minutes and 89% passing accuracy, alongside six chances created.

However, limited opportunities have restricted his rhythm. The report suggests Madrid could consider a reasonable offer in the coming months if his position fails to improve. Chelsea have not submitted a formal bid, and negotiations between the clubs have yet to begin. The defender remains happy in Madrid and has not requested an exit.

Should Chelsea pursue Alexander-Arnold despite their existing options?

Chelsea have a compelling reason to consider the England international. Alonso values possession, progressive passing and players who can create chances from deeper positions. Alexander-Arnold’s crossing and ability to switch play could give the Blues another attacking route, particularly when opponents defend narrowly.

Yet the club already have Reece James and Malo Gusto competing for the right-back role. James offers outstanding quality when available, while Gusto provides dependable cover and regular minutes. Spending heavily on another specialist could create unnecessary competition unless Alonso intends to use Alexander-Arnold in a more advanced or inverted role.

The financial question is also important. Reports have linked the defender with a valuation of around £88 million, although Bernabeu Digital’s reported monitoring does not establish an asking price. His contract reportedly runs until 2031, so Madrid would retain considerable negotiating leverage. Chelsea would need to assess his wages, potential transfer fee and expected role before committing to such an expensive deal.

A move would make more sense if Madrid reduced its demands and Alonso identified a clear tactical purpose for the signing. Otherwise, Chelsea should prioritise strengthening positions where the current squad lacks reliable options. Alexander-Arnold has the quality to improve their build-up play, but quality alone doesn’t justify a major investment when Gusto already performs the job.
