End of road at Chelsea – Defender set to complete £25m transfer to Serie A giants

Trevoh Chalobah to Como: Chelsea have agreed a deal to send Trevoh Chalobah to Como after reaching an agreement worth £25 million upfront, with a further £5 million in add-ons, according to an original report from ESPN. The 27-year-old England defender has travelled to Italy to complete his medical before signing a five-year contract with Cesc Fàbregas’ side.

It closes a chapter that stretches back almost two decades. Chalobah joined Chelsea’s academy as an eight-year-old, progressed through the ranks and gained valuable experience during loan spells at Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town, Lorient and Crystal Palace before cementing his place at Stamford Bridge. He played a key role in Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup triumphs, including a start against Paris Saint-Germain in last summer’s final.

Meanwhile, Como continue their remarkable rise. Fresh from securing Champions League qualification after returning to Serie A, the Italian club have shown real ambition in the transfer market. Chelsea, by contrast, continue their major rebuild under Xabi Alonso after bringing in Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Jordan Henderson while trimming an oversized squad.

Chelsea’s accountants will welcome this deal. Chalobah came through the Cobham academy, which means the £25 million guaranteed fee counts as pure profit for Profit and Sustainability Rules purposes. That creates valuable room after another expensive transfer window, especially following the reported £52 million arrival of Lacroix.

There is another factor. Chelsea simply had too many senior centre-backs. Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi and Benoît Badiashile already compete for minutes, so reducing those numbers became difficult to avoid.

Chalobah produced the strongest campaign of his career in 2025/26, making 34 Premier League appearances, including 31 starts, while scoring three goals, helping record nine clean sheets and completing an outstanding 95 per cent of his passes. He featured 47 times across all competitions, adding eight Champions League appearances and four EFL Cup matches.

His displays earned England recognition, with Thomas Tuchel selecting him for the 2026 World Cup squad, where he appeared in the third-place play-off victory against France.

Reliable defenders are difficult to replace. Chalobah rarely grabbed headlines because he solved problems before they appeared, stayed composed in possession and adapted wherever his manager needed him. Chelsea have strengthened their financial position, yet selling one of last season’s most dependable performers for Trevoh Chalobah to Como still feels like a gamble that accounting figures alone can’t fully explain.
