Tyler Fredricson Celtic Transfer: Tyler Fredricson set for Manchester United exit as Celtic revive interest

Tyler Fredricson Celtic Transfer: The writing is on the wall for Tyler Fredricson. When Michael Carrick named his 25-man Manchester United squad for the pre-season trip to Helsinki to face Wrexham, one notable name stayed behind. Fredricson remained at Carrington, kicking his heels while his teammates boarded the flight. It was a clear, unvarnished signal about his future. BBC reporter Simon Stone confirmed the reality of the situation shortly after. United want a permanent sale this summer. No loans. No temporary fixes. Just a clean break for a player who needs a fresh start.

The 21-year-old centre-back almost left in January. A winter move to Celtic collapsed at the eleventh hour, primarily because a calf injury ruined the paperwork. Fast forward to July, and those talks are very much back on the table. The Scottish Premiership champions need a defender, Fredricson needs a club, and United want the cash.

With two years left on his current contract, value tracking platforms peg his worth around the £4.8m mark. It is a decent chunk of money for a player who has simply run out of road in Manchester.

The night it all went wrong

Football can be brutal. A year ago, Fredricson looked like he might have a squeak of a chance under former boss Ruben Amorim. He even got a taste of top-flight action, coming on for a tiny three-minute cameo against Newcastle United on Boxing Day. That, as it turned out, was the high-water mark of his senior campaign. Then came Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup.

Carrick gave the Stockport-born defender a starting spot. It went horribly. The youngster looked off the pace, picked up a yellow card, and endured a torrid 45 minutes before the coaching staff hauled him off at half-time. An embarrassing defeat followed. His confidence looked shot. He did not feature for the first team again, spending the rest of the year turning out for the under-21s in Premier League 2. Four appearances. 217 minutes. That is no way to kickstart a career.

The hierarchy at Old Trafford is just too crowded. Carrick has real depth at the back now. Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, and Leny Yoro take up the senior slots, while teenager Ayden Heaven has jumped ahead of Fredricson in the youth pecking order. Even when injuries bit hard last term, full-back Noussair Mazraoui was shifted into the middle ahead of him.

Scorzo’s take:

Celtic makes perfect sense. The Glasgow giants need a new central defender after selling Maik Nawrocki to French outfit Lens. Martin O’Neill wants someone comfortable on the ball who can handle the pressure of chasing trophies.

It is a massive platform. Parkhead offers a route into Champions League football and a chance to escape the comfortable bubble of academy football. United will want a decent sell-on clause included in the deal, just in case he fulfils that early promise. Fredricson has to take this chance. Staying in Manchester means playing in front of empty stands for the reserves, and he is far too good for that.
