Phil Salt already knows what it feels like to win a T20 World Cup. He was part of England’s title-winning squad in 2022, but his role was minor. He began the tournament as an outside player, did not bat in the semi-final against India, and scored just 10 runs in the final against Pakistan. It was a medal earned, but not a tournament owned.
This time, it feels different. Salt is no longer fighting for a place. He is expected to open the batting and set the tone for England. He has said openly that this World Cup means more to him because he wants to leave a clear mark on it.
One of the best openers in the world
Since the start of 2023, no player has opened the batting in T20 cricket more than Phil Salt. No one has scored more runs from that position either. His numbers put him well ahead of the rest, with nearly 500 more runs than the next-best opener.
In international cricket, his strike rate of 169.50 places him among the very best. Only India’s Abhishek Sharma scores faster. Salt enjoys watching Abhishek bat and respects his fearless style, even joking that catching him is a personal goal.
India is the biggest challenge
Salt does not shy away from calling India the favourites. Playing at home, he believes they are the strongest team in the tournament. Still, that challenge excites him. Facing India in their own conditions is precisely the kind of test he wants at this stage of his career.
Those conditions are also familiar. Salt is a two-time IPL winner and has the highest strike rate in IPL history among players with at least 25 innings. He believes the league has helped sharpen his skills and mindset for big tournaments.
Ready in mind and heart
England’s series against Sri Lanka will be Salt’s final preparation, surprisingly his first ever meeting with them in international cricket. He plans to rely on clear plans, video study, and intense preparation rather than overthinking.
Off the field, being named Welsh Fire captain adds another emotional layer to his year. Proud of his roots and journey, Phil Salt enters this T20 World Cup not just as a player but as a leader ready to carry England forward.
