Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign Argentinian talent Valentin Barco from their sister club Strasbourg, according to reports from talkSPORT. The versatile midfielder moved to France on a permanent £8 million deal in July 2025 after a short spell with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Since he’s already played a lot under Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior at the Stade de la Meinau, Barco is a natural, perfect choice for the London club. This potential reunion comes after a season in which the 21-year-old became a regular in Ligue 1, making 25 appearances, scoring one goal, assisting four times, and recording an 87% pass completion rate.

The move is gaining traction mostly because of the breakdown in Chelsea’s relationship with Enzo Fernandez. After the 8-2 aggregate hammering by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Fernandez publicly questioned the board and mentioned wanting to live in Madrid. Rosenior dropped the midfielder for crossing a line, which leaves a gap in the squad that Barco could easily fill alongside Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Should Chelsea Replace Fernandez With Barco This Summer?

Chelsea clearly need to change the culture in the dressing room, and Barco is a disciplined, hardworking alternative to the unsettled Fernandez. Now an Argentina international at 21, Barco is great at moving the ball forward and crossing, shown by the 13 big chances he created this season in France.

His defensive work rate is a huge plus, too, as he finished the Ligue 1 season with 15 tackles and won 58% of his ground duels. That said, his slight frame can be a bit of a problem in the physical Premier League, where he sometimes gets outmuscled in the air.

I think Chelsea will pull the trigger on this transfer in June because the owners have to back Rosenior over player dissent. While Fernandez might have a better passing range, his lack of commitment makes him a risk in a rebuilding squad.

Realistically, the Blues should sell Fernandez to Real Madrid and bring in Barco, who already knows the manager’s system and is a real threat from set-pieces. They need his hunger and versatility to help bridge the gap between their young talent and a stable starting eleven next season.
