Football Insider reports that Chelsea are tracking Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs ahead of the summer transfer window. The Blues see the 23-year-old Dutchman as a serious contender for the starting spot, with the Blues potentially ready to drop £60 million to get the deal done.
Currently, both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jørgensen face uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge. So, word is that head coach Liam Rosenior is keen to avoid having three keepers all fighting to be number one. That internal friction makes the interest in Roefs feel real, and Chelsea have a problem they need to fix. However, they aren’t alone in the race. Liverpool and Manchester City are also keeping tabs on the Sunderland man, which will only drive up the price.
Roefs joined Sunderland from NEC Nijmegen in August 2025 on a contract through 2030. He has been vital in making Sunderland’s Premier League return far smoother than expected. According to FootyStats, Roefs has played every minute of his 28 appearances this season, conceding 33 goals and keeping eight clean sheets. With a 71.43% save rate and 1.18 goals conceded per 90 minutes, his impact for a newly promoted side is undeniable.
Should Chelsea spend £60m when Mike Penders is already waiting?
The Roefs rumours highlight a recurring issue at Chelsea. The club already own Mike Penders, a 20-year-old Belgian often compared to a young Thibaut Courtois. Spending £60 million on Roefs would either stall Penders’ development or lead to the same bloated goalkeeping department that has frustrated the club for years.
Roefs is clearly a reliable talent, boasting a 7.07 average FotMob rating this season. He is commanding in the air and composed under pressure, though his distribution in a high-possession system like Chelsea’s remains a question mark.

Realistically, I don’t see Chelsea spending that much this summer. It’s more likely that Penders returns from loan, one of the current keepers is sold, and Roefs stays at Sunderland until 2027. Chelsea don’t need another expensive signing right now, and they need to trust the talent they already have.
