Chelsea re-enter Gabriel Mec race as Grêmio push for a summer sale

Chelsea are back in the running to sign Grêmio’s 18-year-old attacking midfielder Gabriel Mec, with the Brazilian club now looking to wrap up a mid-year transfer worth between €15m and €20m (£12.9m–£17.2m). Mec has made about eight league appearances this season, playing just under 300 minutes with no goals or assists so far, but his potential continues to attract serious European attention, and Chelsea are right at the front of that queue.

Chelsea’s long-running interest gets a second wind

Chelsea are said to have previously put forward the most competitive offer among interested clubs, with Mec compared to Neymar and considered Grêmio’s biggest talent since Ronaldinho. The Blues walked away from a potential deal in late 2025, choosing instead to spend their money on players like Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap. Mec was then briefly close to joining Shakhtar Donetsk on a proposal worth €15m, a deal that ultimately fell through because the player himself chose to stay and continue developing at Grêmio. That decision has now brought the story right back to Chelsea’s door.

Why does the situation now favour Chelsea?

With Mec turning 18 in April, the FIFA age restrictions that previously blocked an international move no longer apply, and the expectation is that an exit deal will be sorted out by mid-year. Grêmio’s contract renewal talks have stalled, and the club cannot afford to let the situation drag on into 2027.

Chelsea’s interest aligns with their broader strategy of investing in top-tier young talent, and his profile, pace, directness, and intelligence suit systems that demand quick decision-making. Given that Chelsea already have Estévão Willian, Andrey Santos, a proven Brazilian pipeline exists.

Good signing for the Blues?

Chelsea’s strategy of hoarding young talent like Gabriel Mec is a double-edged sword. While it secures the next Ronaldinho for roughly €15m-€20m, it creates a logjam that stalls the first team’s immediate progress.

The squad is currently bloated with teenagers. While these players have immense high-ceiling potential, the club are struggling in the present; they recently slipped out of the top four under new manager Liam Rosenior following Enzo Maresca’s departure.

Investing in Mec is brilliant for 2028, but until Chelsea prioritise proven, ready-now players over speculative prospects, they will continue to struggle for consistency in the Premier League title race.
