Manchester City turned on the style with a ruthless second-half performance at Stamford Bridge, coasting to a 3-0 win and cutting Arsenal’s lead at the top to six points. The first 45 minutes suggested a much closer contest; Chelsea actually had the better of the early stages while City looked uncharacteristically flat.
Cole Palmer nearly haunted his old club early on, lashing a shot into the side-netting, and Pedro Neto forced a sharp low save from Gianluigi Donnarumma. But the halftime break flipped the script. Nico O’Reilly broke the deadlock in the 50th minute before Marc Guehi doubled the lead. Jérémy Doku then pounced on a horror mistake from Moisés Caicedo to put the game to bed, completing a three-goal blitz in just 17 minutes.
Manchester City player ratings after 3-0 win against Chelsea
Gianluigi Donnarumma — 7.5: Made a crucial stop early on and followed it up with a brilliant sweeping save to keep out Cole Palmer in the first half. He added a top-class reaction save to deny Marc Cucurella late in the game. It was a confident, commanding display in goal on an afternoon where his defenders mostly kept things quiet.
Matheus Nunes — 7: Found it tough to track Pedro Neto during the first half, but looked much more settled after the break. He showed the kind of defensive reliability and tactical awareness that has defined his season so far, getting stronger as the game went on.
Abdukodir Khusanov — 7.5: The Uzbek centre-back stayed solid early on and looked completely in control once City found their rhythm. He came up with a vital block to stop João Pedro, and nearly finished a great afternoon with a goal after his late long-range strike whistled just wide.
Marc Guehi — 8.5: Facing his former academy club, Guehi didn’t miss a beat at the back. He capped a fine defensive performance with a remarkably composed finish to double City’s lead. He looked calm on the ball all afternoon, which was a complete performance from a defender who played with real authority.
Nico O’Reilly — 8: It was no coincidence that City’s poorest spell came when O’Reilly was struggling to get on the ball. The game swung in City’s favour once he started driving forward and linking up with Doku. His headed goal broke the game open, and he’s played his way right into the PFA Player of the Year conversation.
Rodri — 7: The Spaniard looked off the pace early on, uncharacteristically sloppy in possession and often second to the ball. However, he eventually found his rhythm and helped City dictate the tempo for the remainder of the match.
Contact has been made with attacker – Chelsea star destined to leave Stamford Bridge
Bernardo Silva — 7.5: Silva did most of his best work off the ball, dropping deep to keep play moving. He reached a massive milestone of 451 appearances for the club, moving into joint-eighth on City’s all-time list. With his time at the club potentially winding down, the captain looks determined to go out on a high.
Rayan Cherki — 8.5 (Man of the Match): This was a game of two halves for Cherki. After a quiet first 45, his 31-minute burst in the second half was incredible. He notched two assists to take his season tally into double digits, first with a pinpoint cross for the opener, then with a De Bruyne-style through ball for Guehi. The confidence he showed to flick the ball up for himself before playing in Antoine Semenyo was the highlight of a brilliant performance.
Antoine Semenyo — 7.5: After a slow start, Semenyo grew into the contest. He protected the ball well and looked dangerous whenever he cut inside. He went close just before halftime and showed great decision-making during City’s dominant second-half display. He’ll probably feel he should have got himself on the scoresheet.
Jérémy Doku — 8: Doku was City’s main outlet in a frustrating first half, even if the final ball wasn’t always there. He made sure it clicked in the second period, playing a key role in the front line’s fluidity and grabbing a well-earned goal to finish the scoring.
Erling Haaland — 6.5: A four-game goal drought tells one story, but his actual performance tells another. His hold-up work was effective again, and his movement kept the Chelsea defenders occupied, creating gaps that O’Reilly and Guehi exploited.
Gerrard – This £120m star attacker could be the ‘perfect’ replacement for Salah
Substitutes: Rayan Ait-Nouri (6.5) showed some slick footwork on the left, while Phil Foden (6) put in a defensive shift without really influencing the game creatively. Savinho (6) struggled to get involved, and Mateo Kovacic (6) looked sharp on his return to the side, aside from one shaky moment near his own penalty area.
