Football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley has sent a serious warning to Aston Villa regarding their chase of Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. Reports emerging this week suggest the Midlands club must pay significantly above market value if they want to secure the Frenchman before the window shuts.

Aston Villa Face Jean Philippe-Mateta Premium: Financial Realities Bite in January Window

Speaking to Football Insider, Dr Plumley notes that Villa’s board must be careful with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) right now. He thinks Unai Emery faces a tough call between Mateta and Tammy Abraham. Because of current regulations, signing both strikers remains financially impossible.

The situation at Selhurst Park makes things even harder for the Villans. Marc Guehi is already seeking a way out, specifically with a high-profile move to Manchester City on the cards. This leaves Palace in a vulnerable spot. Dr Plumley reckons the Eagles will demand a massive fee for Mateta, as they don’t want to lose two star players in the same window.

While Villa remain interested, overpaying could land them in trouble with UEFA’s financial rules. Plumley says a deal is possible, but the final price might be more than Villa actually want to pay. So, the club’s hierarchy must decide if Mateta is worth the gamble. They need to compare the cost against the sporting boost, especially with Abraham also on the radar.

“So the potential transfer for Mateta is viable, but it might be that you see one of either Mateta or Abraham and not both.

“But, again, we never know in football. And I think, again, there’s a lot to unpack within that Mateta example.

“So it’s obvious with what’s going on at Palace, and the manager coming out and making the comments, with [Marc] Guehi moving, he’s the next one that everybody’s looking at. He’s the one to, you know, want a challenge elsewhere.

“At some point, Villa would probably have to pay a bit of a premium to get him, would be my view. It might cost Villa a little bit more than they want to pay, which could be the kind of make-or-break given their financial challenges with UEFA and having to be careful of that.

“But I think it’s a viable move, for sure, because, you know, he’s hoping for a move, and he’s a good Premier League transfer for Villa if they can make it work.“

Should Villa make a move for Mateta?

Unai Emery’s side sits at a crossroads as they enter the final week of the January 2026 window. Since Donyell Malen left for Roma earlier this month, Villa have been searching for new faces to keep their Europa League and Premier League runs going. The choice between Mateta and Abraham will likely define their season.

Palace boss Oliver Glasner cleared things up yesterday, stating that while Mateta wants to leave over broken promises, no club have put a formal bid on the table yet. Palace remain reluctant to lose another big name following Guehi’s situation. This stubborn approach means Villa might have to pay the desperation premium Dr Plumley predicted.

Tammy Abraham looks like the more sensible move. A recent report from Fabrizio Romano suggests Villa have already agreed personal terms with the former Chelsea striker. He knows the Premier League well and would not cost nearly as much as Palace demand for Mateta.

Since Villa do not have much breathing room financially, dropping a fortune on a 28-year-old Mateta, who relies heavily on physical dominance, is a big risk. Abraham offers a smoother integration and preserves funds for other areas. Unai Emery should make the Abraham deal his priority. It aligns better with the club’s long-term fiscal health while still resolving the immediate striker shortage.
