Manchester City transfer news: Inter Milan eye defensive coup

Manchester City transfer news: Manchester City are prepared to listen to summer offers for Ruben Dias as Enzo Maresca plots a defensive shakeup at the Etihad, with the post-Guardiola era already producing significant squad turbulence. According to Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, the 28-year-old centre-back is “no longer safe” under the incoming head coach, and that is a situation Inter Milan intend to exploit.

Manchester City transfer news and the Bisseck connection

Inter are hoping to sell Yann Bisseck to Bayern Munich for around €40m this summer, and they already have a replacement in mind. That replacement, per both Italian outlets, is Dias above everyone else. Inter also carry confidence from their previous negotiations with City, having secured Manuel Akanji on loan with a conditional purchase obligation last summer.

Signing Dias would require spending slightly beyond the Bisseck fee, yet the Nerazzurri view it as a statement acquisition and describe it as a “real coup.” Dias joined City from Benfica for £65 million in 2020, went on to win four league titles and the Champions League, and currently holds a contract running until 2029. His agent, Jorge Mendes, has also been actively offering him to other European clubs, including Real Madrid, signalling that a summer exit carries genuine momentum.

What Manchester City and Maresca should actually do?

Selling Dias this summer would be a mistake that Maresca might regret sooner than expected. The Portuguese defender remains among the most technically disciplined centre-backs in European football, and his reading of positional play suits structured systems exceptionally well. Maresca runs a precise, possession-heavy model at every club he manages, and that demands defenders who process space intelligently rather than reactively. Dias does exactly that.

Furthermore, City’s recent losses of Bernardo Silva and John Stones have already stripped the dressing room of serious experience and character. Removing Dias compounds that problem considerably. The smarter approach involves integrating him into Maresca’s structure from the start of pre-season rather than accepting a mid-tier bid from Inter.

If Manchester City receive a genuinely exceptional offer well above €50m, that conversation changes. Short of that, holding Dias and building around his strengths gives Maresca a ready-made leader at the back while the broader squad rebuild takes shape.
