Manchester United transfer news: Red Devils and Aston Villa eye Dortmund’s quiet leader

Manchester United transfer news: German outlet BILD, as relayed by Sport Witness, reports that Manchester United, Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid are all keeping tabs on Borussia Dortmund centre-back Waldemar Anton ahead of the summer window. The 29-year-old, who has made 44 appearances in all competitions this season, is being considered for a third captain role at Signal Iduna Park following the departure of Julian Brandt.

That underlines just how highly Dortmund‘s coaching staff rate him. Manager Niko Kovac has publicly described Anton as “a quiet leader”, someone who organises the backline without demanding attention. Anton joined Dortmund in 2024 from VfB Stuttgart for a fee of £19.6 million and has since established himself as one of the club’s most reliable defensive figures. Reports suggest that a fee in the region of £30m to £34m could be enough to prompt a sale, though Dortmund are keen to hold on to him.

This interest is not new. Sky Sport Deutschland had already placed Anton on both clubs’ shortlists back in March, with Manchester United and Atletico having made official enquiries about his situation. Aston Villa went further still, formally signalling their intent by launching a concrete approach for the German international. BILD now confirm that both Premier League clubs remain in the picture this summer, though no formal bids have yet been submitted.

Manchester United transfer news and the Carrick question

So, does Anton actually fit what Michael Carrick is building at Old Trafford? Carrick’s core principles lean heavily on possession control and positional discipline, and he is not a manager tied rigidly to one shape. Anton is a composed, ball-playing centre-back who reads the game early and communicates well, qualities that suit a manager who likes his defenders to start moves rather than simply clear them.

Manchester United currently have five senior centre-backs on the books, though their fitness and form have raised concerns, and the club are actively scanning the market. Anton brings something slightly different from the existing options. At 6’2″, he is physically imposing, and his experience in a three-man defensive line at Dortmund means he can adapt to different structures without a long adjustment period.

Manchester United transfer news verdict

A deal this summer is genuinely possible. Aston Villa appear to be moving faster and with more purpose, but Manchester United have the pull of history and a fresh managerial project that could appeal to a player of Anton’s profile. He is the kind of experienced, level-headed defender who stabilises a squad, and at the reported fee, the value looks reasonable.
