Manchester United

Brighton & Hove Albion just hit any club chasing Carlos Baleba with a massive reality check. The Seagulls’ top brass officially set a huge price tag for their star midfielder. According to Graeme Bailey, Brighton won’t even consider offers under £100 million.

Brighton won’t even consider offers under £100 million for Manchester United transfer target Carlos Baleba

Manchester United are leading the race for the Cameroon international, but that nine-figure demand is a massive headache for the recruitment team at Old Trafford. Brighton seem to be betting on Baleba’s long-term potential and the way the market is moving rather than just his current stats. It’s the exact same play they used when they squeezed a fortune out of Chelsea for Moises Caicedo.

Analysis of the Baleba dilemma

This leaves Manchester United in a tough spot with the 22-year-old. Baleba has shown flashes of real quality during the 2025/26 season, but he hasn’t been consistent. It doesn’t help that his team are currently stuck in 14th place. Manchester United scouts originally liked his physical power and how well he carries the ball.

Yet, his actual numbers this season are hard to ignore. With zero goals and zero assists in 20 games, a world-record fee for a defensive midfielder feels like a stretch. Michael Carrick wants a high-energy player to take over from the older players in the middle, but dropping £100 million on a kid who isn’t dominating games every week is a huge gamble.

Manchester United have to play this one very carefully. Brighton hold the cards because the player still has plenty of time left on his contract. Still, the Red Devils can’t afford to overpay for “potential” yet again. Instead of caving to this massive asking price, Manchester United’s board should look at other options.

They could also wait until the summer to see if Brighton feel more pressure to sell. You don’t spend that kind of money unless you’re getting a guaranteed superstar. Right now, Baleba just isn’t showing that level every week. Manchester United need to keep their cool and avoid getting swept up in the transfer hype.
