Manchester United have reportedly opened contact with Borussia Dortmund over a possible January 2027 move for Felix Nmecha, according to a report originally sourced from FussballDaten. The 25-year-old Germany international has become a target after a strong spell in club football and a World Cup campaign in June.

United appear to be the most persistent suitors, yet Manchester City and Newcastle United could push into the race. Dortmund value Nmecha at around €100 million, a huge figure for any buyer. He signed a contract extension in March 2026 that runs until June 2030. Nmecha, a former Manchester City academy player, would return to England to prove himself.

His recent numbers show range: 29 Bundesliga appearances and 2,193 minutes in 2025/26, plus five goals across league and Champions League football. His Germany form adds another factor to the interest, particularly after his goal against Curaçao at the 2026 World Cup.

Manchester United transfer news: Why Red Devils should resist €100m

Carrick should reject the fee. United spent heavily on three central midfielders in the previous summer window, so investment in the same area could leave the squad crowded while weaknesses remain elsewhere. Nmecha gives a side physical size at 190cm, carries the ball well and can help a team progress through pressure, but those qualities don’t justify a superstar price.

His production matters. Across 39 club matches last season, he scored five goals, which works out at roughly 0.13 per appearance. That’s useful output for a midfielder, yet hardly the return you expect from a €100m purchase. United need more threat in the final third, greater full-back depth and players who can change matches through goals and assists. Spending nine figures on another midfielder would eat into that budget.

Manchester United have bigger gaps

There is another concern. Adding Nmecha would force Carrick to manage a crowded midfield rotation, potentially limiting minutes for players the club recently recruited. Dortmund hold strong leverage because the new contract stretches to 2030. United can admire the player without accepting Dortmund’s price. A much lower fee might justify the gamble because Nmecha’s ball-carrying, athleticism and positional flexibility have value.

At €100m, though, the priorities should stay clear: strengthen the attack, fix the full-back depth and spend the largest sums where the XI still looks short. For Manchester United, that would make more sense than turning Nmecha into the headline signing, especially with rivals able to create a bidding contest for a player tied down for four more seasons.
