A few days ago, Manchester United sacked their manager, Ruben Amorim, following a back-to-back 1-1 draw against teams placed 16th or lower in the Premier League. It is worth noting that Amorim’s situation wasn’t complicated solely by the results.
The post-match comments made by him at Elland Road hinted at internal tension. For those unaware, he publicly stressed that he was the manager, not merely a head coach. With mounting injuries and players absent for AFCON duty, the environment around him appeared increasingly unstable, and United finally pulled the strings. Reacting to the same, Pep Guardiola had some rather kind words for the Portuguese.
Pep Guardiola hails Ruben Amorim as a ‘Top’ manager
Ahead of Manchester City’s mid-week Premier League clash against Brighton, Pep Guardiola was asked to give his thoughts on Ruben Amorim being sacked by their rivals in Red. He described Amorim as a “top manager” and wished him luck by saying:
“All I can say is Ruben is a top manager. The decision has been made by our neighbours but I wish Ruben all the best for the future.” He added, “The gaps are sometimes so small. In their last game, United had a lot of absences and sometimes it is hard to cope. When important players are not available it is always difficult.”
Guardiola was careful to remain respectful towards Manchester United and their players. He avoided criticising the club’s decision-making. Instead, he focused on the realities managers face at big clubs.
Guardiola acknowledged that Amorim was working under challenging circumstances, particularly with key players unavailable through injury and international commitments. He noted that when results do not come, context is often ignored, regardless of the process underway. That said, his comments reflected a broader empathy shared by managers who understand how quickly fortunes can change at the highest level.
Manchester United’s coaching struggle continues.
Following Amorim’s exit, Manchester United finds itself in another period of its extended struggle to find consistency since Alex Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013. Since then, the club has gone through a series of managers who brought their own management approaches and visions for the future but were ultimately let down by their inconsistent performance.
It has been challenging to make consistent progress due to inconsistent selection, which has led to a series of teams being selected to accommodate their performance strategies. In the wake of Alex Ferguson’s retirement, Manchester United has never been seen as a consistently strong outfit for an extended period, despite significant investment and domestic success throughout.
Regression has tended to follow periods of performance, leading to a series of resets at the structural and operational levels across their string of managers. That said, with United being without a manager again, it would be interesting to see what’s next for the club.
